Keith Olbermann on Prop 8

Thank you and a big kiss to my mum for pointing me to this.

And thank you, Keith Olbermann. You may speak to me of the human heart anytime; and I am absolutely sure that you will find your name in that book.

  1. This is truly amazing. If all public discourse could be conducted at this level, with such eloquence and accuracy, we would all be in a much better place. I have seen this clip on a number of sites and blogs, I hope it will move the debate forward. If nothing else it made me smile!

  2. What I like about it is that he speaks from his heart. I wish more people did that.

It seems to me that when people criticize messages like Olbermann’s for not being “perfect” — too emotional or too many words or yeah, but other people have already made these arguments or whatever — that we are missing the point. The point is that he’s on national TV speaking not to make political points, not to be clever, not to “win” anything. He’s on TV speaking his truth in the best way he can find to speak it.

I respect that. I even respect it (which is different from liking it) when people whose truth opposes mine do it, as long as they are being honest about what they feel instead of lying and subverting and trying to “win.”

  3. When I first saw this last night, I became an instant Keith Olbermann fan. I was already a Bluenote fan.

He is so right. What a lot of people don’t seem to realize is that this is “not really just about Prop 8.”

“This is about the… human heart, and if that sounds corny, so be it….

…What is this, to you? Nobody is asking you to embrace their expression of love. But don’t you, as human beings, have to embrace… that love? The world is barren enough.

It is stacked against love, and against hope, and against those very few and precious emotions that enable us to go forward. Your marriage only stands a 50-50 chance of lasting, no matter how much you feel and how hard you work.

And here are people overjoyed at the prospect of just that chance, and that work, just for the hope of having that feeling. With so much hate in the world, with so much meaningless division, and people pitted against people for no good reason, this is what your religion tells you to do? With your experience of life and this world and all its sadnesses, this is what your conscience tells you to do?”

The whole text is here on the Huffington Post site.

  4. Thank you. It made my eyes water. I wish we would all hold our lives close to that book. Knowing that there are people who think and feel like Olbermann and can reach a large population gives me hope.
