Listen. That sigh you hear? That combination of fond amusement and Oh, Chist, not another one already? That is Nicola, who has just been told that my fantasy boyfriend Johnny Depp has a new movie coming out in December.
The Tourist is a remake of a 2005 recent French film, and from the trailer I’m already banging my head that the female character is a Mysterious Woman Of Mystifying Mystery with an English accent that I didn’t believe in Tomb Raider and don’t believe now. I could wish for something a little deeper, and if wishes were fishes we’d all be feeding Copper River salmon to the neighborhood cats, you know? I console myself that the movie has Johnny Depp and Paul Bettany and Rufus Sewell and it’s shiny! What can I say? Some days that’s enough.

JeezLouise. Like we’ve never seen a mistaken identity chased by criminals with big guns movie before. And Jolie with a British accent? And Depp is he trying some kind of Slavic accent???? It’s Strangers on a Train meets Die Hard in a foreign land, and I’ll bet you anything Kelley, that’s how it was sold in the pitch meeting.
@Anonymous, no bet — I am guessing you are absolutely right. I am not expecting it to be my favorite JD film of all time :). But once I get connected with an artist’s work, I tend to give them a lot of rope and will turn up to support them unless/until it becomes crystal clear to me that all the electricity is gone for me. People can stumble a lot with me in this way and I’ll still hang in. Lord knows, I’m still a U2 fan, which pretty much says it all right there.
