Dimensional art

For your enjoyment, here are some beautiful examples of paper art.

I’m always so taken by this kind of thing, which for me is in the same playground as the sand art of Kseniya Simonova (astonishing video below) — when a physical 3rd dimension is essential to the work, when I understand that the artist has visualized not just an image, but a final shape, and has had to work out the process for getting there. The paper art does not rely on the real-time execution that is part of the sand art, but they are still connected… the artist using a part of their brain that is pretty much a closed room for me. I’m really not spatial (grin).

Enjoy.

  1. Paper based temporal art has different dynamics to sand (it can’t be retracted in the same way, for one thing) but it has similar strategy and economy of space. It has always reminded me of chess – the same contrasts, the same advance manoeuvre planning. I’m really glad you like it.

  2. I know this isn’t connected but guess where Terri and I are going to be Sunday night. Hint, it in Pasadena. Oh, and more in line with the above artist, what was going on with the tearful audience shots?

  3. rhbee, cool!!! Am jealous. Hope you enjoy the show!

The sand artist was dramatizing the Ukraine/USSR experience of WWII for a Ukrainian audience. I’m guessing most people in the audience have either personal memory of the war or grew up with families scarred by it.

  4. The reason I wondered is because I was watching it without sound as T was sleeping and I felt my own emotions rising as I began to see the story and watch the intensity of the artist’s performance.

  5. Oh yeah, about the U2 concert, T sprung it on me very off hand. You know, like, I happened to know the people at the Rose Bowl and they wondered if I might want to come see this band that was playing on Sunday. Do you want to come along? OMG, as they say.
