Images of 2008 (part 3)

Here’s the last of Boston.com’s 3-part series.

I’m particularly in love with this one:
The Tower of David in Jerusalem

It’s the Tower of David in Jerusalem with images of books on shelves projected on the exterior walls — if you look in the top left of the photo, you’ll see part of the actual tower. How cool is this? A building made of books.

I used to think I would live a life made of books. That’s not so true these days — at least it’s not working out that way right this moment — but this photo has given me a whole new way to think about it. A life made of books. A building made of books. A city…

  1. Thanks for the photographs. As a justly famous author once wrote, “a person’s a person, no matter how small.” We are so small, and yet so persistant, in the face of ugliness, natural disasters and strife. I guess I’ll stick around to find out what happens.

  2. Riding a wakeboard across flooded Piazza San Marco in Venice, Italy seems fun. I could sell those things in Guadalajara, the city floods like that when it rains.

I also think the building-made-of-books is great. A life in literature seems like a dream to me, too.

barbara, I guess I’ll stick around to find out what happens. I had a teacher who was always depressed. He said the one thing that kept him from committing suicide was that he wanted to find out which DVDs would be released next week, or what new film he could watch in the theaters. I feel sort of the same about books: I want to read the next story that leaves me breathless.

We are so small, and yet so persistent… I find that sort of fascinating and extremely scary. While short-term or immediate disasters may bring out the best in us, long term not really. I think that under the stress of a disaster that would operate over a number of years, we’d turn even uglier and more selfish and absolutely worthy of being eliminated by a giant meteorite. I’m glad most people are way more optimistic than me. I just watched the remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, and thought it’d be cool to have some of those Apocalypse-bringing toys. As it is, I can only hope that Professor Barnhardt is right when he says: “It’s only at the precipice that we change.” I guess we get to find out eventually.

    😉

  3. Karina, thanks for your thoughts. The other two things that keep me around are curiosity and laughter, both at myself and with other people. I couldn’t stand it if I offed myself and thus missed a laugh or an adventure. All other things being equal, I plan to be around for a long time.
